Correct diet before, during and after sport (part2)

Correct diet before, during and after sport (part2)

Professional advice/ Chang Pei-rong, Sentosa

Supplement protein and saccharides after sport

What is the suitable length of time to wait before eating after doing sport? This is a question people trying to lose weight will surely be interested in.

Using the barn metaphor, the muscles and the liver are the body’s barn, with the energy from food stored in the barn after being converted into glycogen. When the body’s energy is lacking, the mechanism for burning glycogen will be activated to meet the body’s needs. In the 30 minutes after we stop doing sport the barn is empty; if we eat now glycogen fuel production efficiency is at its peak.

In the past, it was said that if we ate straight after doing sport we would easily become fat because our body digests and absorbs the nutrients in food most effectively at this time. However, in a study, one group of subjects was given food 30 minutes after doing sport while a second group was given the same food four hours after doing sport;10 weeks later, the first group had a small increase in muscle mass and a reduction in body fat;group 2 did not see as big a reduction in body fat as the first group. This result turned the myth that eating immediately after sports makes you fat on its head.

milk is a good choice after sport

Nutritionist Chen Pei-rong emphasizes that the main point about eating after sport is to eat foods that can immediately give your muscles an energy boost, mainly foods rich in saccharides, together with a suitable amount of protein.

Correct diet before, during and after sport (part1)

Correct diet before, during and after sport (part1)

Professional advice/Chang Pei-rong, Sentosa

The old adage “You are what you eat” doesn’t just apply in daily life, in fact, whether your diet is correct before, during and after sport can also affect the sporting objectives you have set and your results.

Diet before sport Simple in principle

People often say that you shouldn’t eat before sport. Is this correct? Nutritionist Chang Pei-rong says that actually it’s incorrect to do sports without having eaten anything all; it is essential to eat before doing sport, but the most suitable time to eat is 3-4 hours before. If eating 1-2 hours before sport, she suggests not eating too much or food that is too complex, for example, high fat foods such a French fries or fried chicken; instead, small quantities of foods that are high in saccharides, such as toast, rice balls or fruit, should be eaten because they can be easily digested and absorbed and immediately provide the energy and nutrients your body needs.

Saccarides are digested faster than any other nutrient by the body, followed by protein and then fat. Fat needs the assistance of more digestive enzymes before it can be absorbed by the digestive tract. If people who have the habit of exercising in the early morning do it without eating anything first they will feel easily tired and will be unable to concentrate.

We would thus like to remind people who have the habit of getting up early to play badminton to be sure to eat some breakfast before going out to play. When your body begins to store up energy you will perform better when you do sport!

The Higher the Racket String Poundage the Better?

Text / VICTOR Advance Product R&D Dept.

No matter if you are a beginner or have been playing badminton for years, you will probably have been bothered by the three big questions in badminton

1. Which type of racket suits me?
2. Which string type should I choose?
3. What is the right poundage for the strings?

Indeed, racket, string type and poundage are the three main factors that affect feel when you play. Generally speaking, the order of the three for effect on feel is, from greatest effect to lowest: racket>string poundage>string type.

Simple stretching exercises for ELDERLY (Part 2)

Professional consultant/Hsu Chih-Chung, Physical Therapist Li-Kong Ortho Clinic, New Taipei City

Frequently asked question 2 : Frozen shoulder

People over 50 years of age are most susceptible to frozen shoulder with the likely causes overuse use of previous injury; of course, it sometimes occurs for an unknown reason.

The shoulder is a round joint and can move through 360 degrees in normal circumstances however, sufferers of frozen shoulder have the range of movement restricted by pain. The pain that can so great that women can’t undo the buttons at the back of their underwear or even brush their hair. If people who sleep on their side put pressure on the injured shoulder, when they get up they will feel numbness and pain, and they have a dull ache in their shoulder on cold and wet days.

Anti-joint degeneration stretching health care for the elderly

Professional consultant/Hsu Chih-Chung, Physical Therapist Li-Kong Ortho Clinic, New Taipei City

Frequently asked question 1: Degenerative arthritis

If we imagine the body to be a car, one of the causes of degenerative arthritis, which people are most susceptible to after 60 years of age, is that the lubricating liquid within the car “part”, the knee, diminishes as the knee joint is used over time and, when it reaches a point where it is insufficient, it causes the cartilage in the knee joint to rub or collide when a person is walking or going up or down stairs because of the lack of a lubrication medium, causing inflammation that produces pain; over time it becomes degenerative arthritis.

It is worth noting that anyone whose knees have suffered impact in an accident or have twisted their knee or torn or severed their knee ligaments can, over time, even if they feel they have fully recovered, induce joint pain by having incorrect posture. When the cartilage is only lightly damaged or when lubricating fluid is lacking, taking supplements such as glucosamine can delay the worsening of symptoms so we suggest that people who have injured their knee(s) take nutrition supplements in advance.

The symptoms of degenerative arthritis are that the knee has a dull pain even when it isn’t moving, especially in cold and wet weather; symptoms include: the surface skin on the knee feels cold to the touch; when going up or down stairs there is a slight ache in the knee; the knee is red, swollen, hot or painful; in serious cases the sufferer will find it hard to walk; and there is clearly discernible swelling of the inside of the knee. As well as the elderly, women and the overweight are more susceptible to degenerative arthritis because of muscle weakness, lower bone density after menopause and excess load on the knees, respectively.

Quadriceps stretching

With both feet firmly on the ground, bend the right knee and lift up backwards, grab the top of the right foot in the right hand and then pull the thigh gently backwards until you feel a slight ache at the front of the thigh. Hold the position for 30-60 seconds; once on each side is a set and do 5-10 sets.
Readers who have read the article ‘Which muscle groups do we use when we play badminton? (Part 1)’ will know that the quadriceps is the main muscle group used in the most difficult attacking shot, the jump smash, so we would like to remind everyone to stretch the quadriceps ......Full Article

Self-care stretching exercises for smart phone addicts and slouchers

Professional consultant/Hsu Chih-Chung, Physical Therapist Li-Kong Ortho Clinic, New Taipei City

Frequently asked question 1 : Smart phone addicts

Not only adults are smart phone addicts. The universality of smart phones and tablet PCs has made children more likely to become addicted to phone and computer games. Due to their young age and elasticity of muscles, when they begin using 3C products they can play for a long time but, as they use for a longer period of time, muscle tolerance will decline; and also long-term poor posture with head down as they play with their phone/tablet affects a child’s physical development and height.
When we sit correctly our waist, shoulders and neck are straight; when we look down we not only stretch the suboccipital muscles in our necks, we also make our beck muscles work continually; when a poor posture is maintained for a long period of time the neck muscles can become tight of slightly torn which irritates the nerves and leads to migraine, and also leads to tightness and discomfort in the trapezius and levator scapulae. Also, when our heads are down our upper back will also sink forwards; quite a few cases have been recorded of young males who injured their neck or waist because they were sat slouched on a sofa, with back bent and only using their bottom to sit.

Suboccipital muscles stretching exercises

Sit down on a chair with back straight and upper body still, and then tilt the head forward so it feels like you are squeezing out a double chin and hold for 1-2 seconds; repeat 10-20 times.
This stretching exercise will be difficult for beginners and needs practice. When stretching remember to move the neck back horizontally .......Full Article

Stretching to help prevent and ease de Quervain's tenosynovitis and tennis elbow, ailments commonly suffered by women

Professional consultant/Hsu Chih-Chung, Physical Therapist Li-Kong Ortho Clinic, New Taipei City

Frequently asked question 1 :
Mother’s wrist (de Quervain's tenosynovitis)

“Mother’s wrist” isn’t only suffered by mothers. It’s not only caused by holding a baby or pet for a long time; repeatedly cutting vegetables, carrying plates, mixing, stapling documents together or typing can also cause the abductor pollicis longus muscle and extensor pollicis brevis muscle on the outside of the thumb to become inflamed or be slightly torn, affecting the left and right movement of the wrist, with the sufferer having no wrist strength and swelling; when the wrist radialis muscle tendons (Flexor carpi radialis) are seriously torn the sufferer will have difficult holding a pen or will tremble. When the symptoms are slight, first apply a hot pack to the wrist and, after doing stretching exercises, massage the wrist for five minutes, and then apply an ice pack for five minutes; if the pain is severe, apply an ice pack to prevent the inflammation worsening.

Stretching the abductor pollicis longus muscle and extensor pollicis brevis muscle

Press the right upper arm firmly against the body with elbow bent and palm open, then tuck the thumb into the palm and then make a fist with the other four fingers wrapped around the thumb; then lightly turn the wrist towards the ground and maintain the position for 30-60 seconds, relax, then repeat 10-20 times.......Full Article

Simple stretching exercises for WORKING PEOPLE

Self-care stretching exercises for people who stand or sit a lot or frequently lift heavy objects

Professional consultant/Hsu Chih-Chung, Physical Therapist Li-Kong Ortho Clinic, New Taipei City

Type 1 People who sit for long periods at work

Frequently asked question 1: “Mouse wrist”

So called “mouse wrist” is also called Carpal tunnel syndrome. When people who sit for long periods at work use a PC and mouse often, the Median nerve on the side of the wrist becomes blocked after being put under pressure by the carpal tunnel for a long time, resulting in lack of blood and causing numbness, prickly feeling and, in serious cases, weakness of the muscles of the hand, leaving the sufferer unable to exert any force with the hand. Apart from switching to an ergonomic mouse pad and not letting the elbow hang in the air when using a PC you should also remember to lift up the arms every 15 minutes and spend 10 seconds releasing wrist pressure, and also do wrist exercises when resting.

● Wrist stretching exercise

Stretch out the right hand with palm up and arm straight, palm spread; then pull the fingers down gently with the left hand; keep the position for 30-60 seconds, once on each side is a set, do 5-10 times.
Every experienced badminton player will know that the wrist is the key to exerting power. To play lethal smashes we must regularly take care of our wrist. Do wrist stretching exercises every day and you won’t end up feeling like ......Full Article

Thing you have to know about STRETCHING

(Professional consultant/Hsu Chih-Chung , Physical Therapist Li-Kong Ortho Clinic, New Taipei City)

Stretching exercises are what people commonly refer to as “pulling tendons”. The muscle tissue of the human body is connective tissue that has a very close relationship to temperature change;like chewing gum, it is elastic when the weather is warm and hardens when the weather is cold; on cold and wet days blood circulation in the body is relatively poor and this has a certain effect on muscle elasticity. Through the pumping effect of simple stretching exercises the tendons that connects muscle and bone are extended suitably, helping blood circulation by reducing tissue fluid stasis at these points caused by the cold weather, and also making muscles more supple.

Easing discomfort, improving posture, stretching has many benefits

There are two types of stretching, static and dynamic stretching; doing dynamic stretching before exercise extends muscles so they perform better in competition and also reduces the chance of sports injury; also, with respect to muscle tightness or minor trauma caused by strenuous exercise, static stretching after exercise can also be used to slowly relax ......Full Article

A “badminton Hawkeye system” that is different to the tennis one

In the second men’s singles match at the Singapore leg of the BWF Super Series on April 11, 2014, India’s Srikanth K challenged the call of the line judge. Soon after, computer animation similar to that of the Hawkeye system used in tennis appeared on TV screens. This was the further use by the BWF of a technological assistance system since the Instant Review System (IRS) was formally introduced at the Super Series Finals in December, 2013 to make badminton competitions fairer.
On April 4 during the Indian Open, the BWF said in a press release that, after testing the systems of various suppliers for several months, it had decided to sign a contract with Hawkeye Innovation and the company would be responsible for ......Full Article

Hawkeye appears at badminton matches? (part 2)

The IRS system adopted by the BWF has been provided by the US IMG company that is responsible for production of TV broadcast this year. It combines eight high-speed cameras and two display-use computers. When a player challenges a line judge’s call the umpire will make a signal to the courtside referee or assistant referee who will see a slow motion repeat of the shuttlecock landing and decide whether it was “in” or “out.”

Originally, if the line judge was correct, the referee would give a thumbs up signal to the umpire; if the challenge by the player was successful, the referee would give a thumbs down signal. The slow motion repeat of the shuttlecock landing is not shown on the big screen for spectators to see, only the referees see it and this probably takes into account the fact ......Full Article

Hawkeye appears at badminton matches? (Part 1)

We mentioned previously how badminton is the fastest ball sport so, with judges relying on the naked eye and the shuttlecock flying through the air like a shooting star, there are occasional disputes about whether the shuttlecock is actually “in” or “out” when it lands. There is also the risk that a patriotic line judge will make a call that favors his compatriot. Just think, if a disputed call happens at the end of a match at a key moment when there is only one point between the two sides, the player who suffers will be sure to be depressed and helpless; the spectators will feel disappointed and dissatisfied that an exciting contest has been suddenly brought to an end in a ridiculous way.

Will the Competition Rules of Badminton be Changed?

At present the rules of badminton are that a point is won by the side winning each rally and the first to reach 21, or win two consecutive points after 20-20 is reached, wins a game, and the first to win two games wins the match. However, the adoption of new rules by the Indian Badminton League and the China Badminton Super League mean that there’s a chance that the existing rules, in existence for eight years, may be changed. In a press release at the end of last year the BWF mentioned that changes in recent competition rules had been noticed and that research would be carried out and an experimental new competition rules would ......Full Article
