Play Better Badminton Training 2:Lower Limb Strength

Increasing muscle strength not only improves physical ability, it also increases a player’s ability to move around the court quickly and deliver powerful smashes. We know that badminton is a “whole body” sport, requiring upper body strength to allow the shuttlecock to be hit powerfully and also requires good lower body muscle strength so we can move around the court quickly using the 6-point footwork.

We all know that the 6-point footwork is one of the basic steps when learning to play badminton and level of mastery of the footwork will affect how good you play. If you don’t have good lower body muscle strength you won’t be able to move freely around the court through the whole match. This article will show you how to do some simple lower body muscle strength training. The weight used can be adjusted to suit the physical level of the individual (dumbbell or water-filled plastic water bottle). We suggest you gradually increase the intensity of training in terms of weight used, number of movements and sets and frequency of sessions to avoid overload and thus make injury less likely......<FULL ARTICLE>

2012 BWF World Ranking up to October 4

The two most important international tournaments in September were the Asian Masters held in Changzhou, China and the Japan Open Super Series held in Tokyo. With these two competitions held too close together, most of the better known players chose to appear at the longer established Tokyo tournament.

Of course, the players in Japan and China were determined to perform well in front of their home crowds and the number of points they collected saw a clear increase on other tournaments. This is why, in the BWF world rankings for October released on October 3, the players who have moved up in the Top 10 Club are mainly from these two countries. At present the top spots in the five badminton disciples are held by men’s singles : Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei ; women’s singles : China’s Wang Yi Han ; men’s doubles South Korea’s Lee Yong Dae / Jung Jae Sung ; women’s doubles : China’s Tian Qing / Zhao Yun Lei;and mixed doubles : China’s Xu Zhen / Ma Jin.... <FULL ARTICLE>

One to Watch – Tai Tzu Ying

One title does not portend success for a player but Tai Tzu Ying’s recent victory in Japan strongly hinted she may be nearing the upper echelons of the women’s game.

The Chinese Taipei teenager – who wrested the Yonex Japan Open Superseries Women’s Singles championship – is among a clutch of young girls, including Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon and India’s PV Sindhu, whose impressive performances increasingly suggest the future of women’s badminton is in collectively capable hands.

Tai Tzu Ying wears the crown, becoming the youngest ever Super Series women’s singles champion

Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying came from behind to beat Japanese player Hirose Eriko2:1 and win the 2012 women’s’ singles title, her first individual Super Series title, and also record the best ever performance by a Chinese Taipei player in a Super Series tournament.

Tai did not set any special targets before the final. To begin with, facing home player Hirose Eriko who was looking to be Japan’s first winner of the Japan Open and had vocal support from the home fans, Tai started off quite poorly and made a series of errors partly due to court factors, losing the first game without much of a fight 9:21. After changing sides and moving to her preferred half of the court, she began to attack initiatively, moved her opponent around the court, and speeded up the rhythm of play, in the first half of the game opening up a fearsome 12:0 lead, and going on to take the second game 21:9, showing that she would was determined to win the match and take the title. <FULL ARTICLE>
