Men’s Korean team celebrated their third Asian Games triumph (1986, 2002, 2014). Son Wan Ho robbed the crucial first point of World Champion Chen Long, and Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong followed up for a second win, before veteran and two-time Olympic semifinalist Lee Hyun Il rose to the occasion and enabled the host team to claim the final victory, beating China’s third singles Gao Huan.
Son Wan Ho defeated Chen Long to take the first singles point for Korea in the Team final.
Player of the week
World No.7 Son Wan Ho, in front of a vocal home crowd, gave Korea a confidence booster by powering through reigning World Champion Chen Long in the battle of first singles in Men’s Team Final against China, allowing just 5 points in the first game before winning 21-5 22-24 21-14. Korea finally secured the gold medal through a deciding fifth rubber.
Battle of the week
Mixed doubles third seeds Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir fought off an early deficit to eliminate Shin Baek Choel and Chang Ye Na 19-21 21-16 21-9 in the quarterfinal match that saw Natsir throw in a variety of beautiful net play to open the deciding game and eventually win to guarantee a medal.
VICTOR STAR of the week
20-year-old Tai Tzu Ying became the first Taiwanese woman ever to win a singles medal in the Asian Games. She took out local hope Sung Ji Hyun in the quarterfinals before losing to World No.1 Li Xuerui in three, taking home a bronze medal.
Tai Tzu Ying is the first player from Taiwan to win an Asian Games medal in women's singles.
